Lost ‘n Portland Podcast

I sit down with Chris Franklin from the Lost ‘n Portland podcast to talk about leaving (and coming back to) the advertising industry, creative intent, and the journey of making things in Portland. (And sorry, Malcolm Gladwell, for giving credit to Malcolm McDowell. But let’s face it, you’re both great.)

Accolades

As fellow creatives assigned to the Nike account, I had the great pleasure of partnering with Danny. From the first time I met him, it was clear that he’s especially driven by two all-too-rare qualities: genuine curiosity, and the belief that the work — not ego — reigns supreme. He continually brought sharp thinking to campaigns and a deft eye for detail.

Despite being fairly siloed in our respective departments, we always collaborated holistically with one another on briefs. It wasn’t about titles; it was about ideas. For example, if I spotted a possible design solution, it was eagerly welcomed (despite my being “just” in charge of copy), and his insightful contributions toward my copy strategies were equally appreciated.

I was also deeply impressed by the way he handled clients, especially with regard to live feedback. When leading presentations, he transformed those ordinarily fraught moments into genial conversations that left everyone in a better mood. He never missed an opportunity to build rapport with stakeholders while reinforcing that everyone in the room shared the same goal: a stellar outcome with an effortless user experience.

I’ve worked with all manner of strategic and creative partners over my thirty-year career. I don’t hesitate to place Danny Palmer on the highest tier of advertising professionals with whom I’ve ever worked.

As a senior Creative Director, Danny is a rare talent who’s fully capable of leading all aspects of the creative process from strategy to concept development to production. He’s a highly competent, passionate and talented professional with inspiring versatility.

However, his kindness is what really sets Danny apart... His thoughtfulness and compassion to those with whom he works never wavers in even the highest-pressure situations.
— Shawn Bavaresco, Creative Director & Entrepreneur

Danny quickly became invaluable on my creative team. He’s a hybrid creative, by the purest definition, comfortable and productive in digital, social and traditional media. (He was also invaluable for his cabernet knowledge during many a late-night creative session.)

He’s passionate about great creative and has a well-rounded experience from working at great shops all over the country. This shows in his thoughtful problem-solving. Danny was the guy I could count on to get ideas crafted and shit done.
— Paul Behnen, Creative Director

Danny is one of a very few versalists I know. He has mastered many vertical disciplines and also reaches far to encompass numerous creative skills needed to produce an industry-leading product. He is a writer at his core, stretching outside advertising into entertainment, webcast and publishing. He does killer layouts, can key line, retouches, shoots high quality photography and apparently just learned Python. What?! Who does that?

The newest trend for creative directors is to not only manage down and up but also across, building a creative team among teams. This is his place at a large agency and also why growing shops need him. The responsibility of the creative culture of an agency isn’t just for ECDs. Danny grabs the wheel, and drives.
— John Preskitt, Creative Partner

Over the years I have worked with & known Danny as a constant source of inspiration, an idea creator, a doer.

Danny is a great partner to connect with because he’s always willing to carry the extra weight to make sure every project and idea is perfect.

He also knows how to pause the busyness of work and life to ask how you are. He genuinely wants to know. He is a great listener, and the first person to make you laugh out loud.
